Unlocked smartphones are smartphones which have the marvelous ability to be used with any cell phone provider, regardless of the network. The upside to buying unlocked smartphones is that the you have more choices available to you about what kind of plan you want, as well as the ability to switch cell phone providers if you want to travel or is you want new services. The downside is that the you usually have to pay full price for unlocked smartphones, Instead of subsidizing the cost of the phone through a contract with a service provider like you would be doing with a locked smartphone.

The procedure of locking smartphones was created to make it difficult to leave a particular service provider. Consumers began to fight against this policy in 1999, usually because they wanted to have a certain smartphone on a certain network.

These “locked smartphones” are phones that have been programmed so that you can only use them with certain cellular providers. Most of the time, this can be reversed with little problem. In other circumstances, the phone may be programmed in such a way that it is unlikely that you will be able to use it with another provider. Some companies actually make smartphones that only work with specific providers. An unlocked phone, however, can be used on any network that permits the use of an unlocked phone.

Smartphones are cell phones which provide much more functionality than a normal cell phone. A normal cellphone usually offers voice, SMS and picture messaging . A smartphone though, has a full QUERTY keyboard or touch screen, a computer operation system such as Windows Mobile, and functionality which is nearly equal to a personal computer. Smartphones are the most popular with people who travel frequently or who own a business.

Cell phone carriers often suggest a hearty data plan which enables the user to transfer some pretty large quantities of data. MMS messages, in contrast, are fairly small. When your browsing the internet though, the data being moved can be several times larger. Because of this, smartphone cell plans will cost you more money, and some consumers grow frustrated with particular providers, but want to keep their smartphone. They have the choice of having an unlocked smartphone and they can get rid of one service plan and begin another.

There are a variety of ways for obtaining an unlocked smartphone. Some people prefer to go straight to the manufacturer, but the alternative is to get the phones through third party retailers. Some of the service providers sometimes offer an unlocked version of their phones to the customers, giving people the opportunity of receiving a locked smartphone at a fraction of the price with a contract, or getting a the more pricey unlocked smartphone.

You also have the option of unlocking certain smartphones on your own, if you have some computer knowledge, but you can permanently damage a device this way. Your provider will probably not replace a phone that has been broken in this way so unlocking one when you don’t know what you are doing is risky. Knowing how to unlock a smartphone can save you some money though.
